Boats in The Bahamas: schedules, fares and docks

One page per boat, with the dock at each end, the days it runs and the fare in the currency the operator uses. The Paradise Island to Pearl Island boat is an excursion: the company that owns the island sells the ride only inside a day package, never as a ferry ticket on its own.

Boats in The Bahamas come in several kinds, and the kind decides how you plan. A fast ferry keeps a published schedule but may sail only on certain days of the week. A water taxi leaves when it has enough passengers or at times set locally. Mailboats carry freight and passengers between Nassau and the Family Islands on longer, less frequent runs, and excursion boats take visitors out to a cay as part of a day programme.

The Bahamian dollar is pegged to the US dollar at one to one, and operators quote prices in one or the other. Every fare on this site keeps the currency the operator uses, written B$ or US$, so a plain dollar sign never leaves you guessing.

Each page says which dock the boat uses at both ends, shown on a map with its coordinates, because in Nassau in particular several boats leave from different docks along the same stretch of waterfront.

Docks on the map

Pins sit on the docks where you board and land, and a dashed line links the two ends of each trip. Select a pin to see how long the boat takes, who runs it and a link to the full page.

For each boat: how long it spends on the water, how many sailings there are and which company runs them. Where the operator gives no figure, the cell shows a dash.

Kinds of boat

Whether there is a fixed schedule, whether you need to book and what the ticket includes all depend on the kind of boat, so every page is labelled with one. An island excursion boat, for example, is sold together with the visit to the island, not as a ticket on its own.

Questions about boats in The Bahamas

Do I pay in Bahamian or US dollars?

Usually either, since the two currencies trade at par and US dollars are widely accepted. Operators still quote in one of them, and each fare on this site shows which: B$ for Bahamian dollars, US$ for US dollars.

Do the ferries run every day?

Not always. Some fast ferry routes sail only on certain days of the week, and water taxis may keep local hours. Each page lists the sailing days the operator publishes for the period it covers.

What is a mailboat?

A government-contracted vessel that carries mail, freight and passengers between Nassau and the Family Islands. Mailboats are slower and less frequent than fast ferries, and their departure days can shift with cargo and weather.

Does the boat fare include the day on the island?

For excursion boats to private cays, the boat ride is generally part of a day package sold by the island's operator. Where the operator separates the transfer from the visit, the page shows both.

Where do the times and fares come from?

From the operator's own website or printed schedule, or from the public authority responsible, read on the date shown beside each table. Figures found only in travel directories or on resellers' sites are left out.
